Like-Minded is a group show that is meant to act as a companion piece to Michael Dumontier’s solo exhibition A Moon or a button. Curator Micah Lexier has brought together artworks of over 30 artists which resonate with Dumontier’s interests and sensibilities, works which include peculiarities such as simpliﬁed forms, found imagery, stationary and trompe l’oeuil. The artists themselves are diverse, ranging from emerging artists, to Dumontier’s contemporaries to some of Canada’s more established artists. In addition to mounting works on the gallery walls, Lexier has chosen to place a number of the works inside a pair of vitrines placed in the centre of the gallery space, and will be presenting two video works in an adjacent space.

22,000 newspapers, 2,500km in 2 days… Miami here we come!

“History is a year long collaborative project between Niall McClelland and Jeremy Jansen illustrating research into their respective cultural backgrounds. McClelland’s focus is centered primarily on Irish history and the religious and political troubles that have plagued the country throughout its history. Jansen’s research involves his exploration of Italian culture and the role of the mafia both in Italy and its migration to North America.
The artists will be producing a series of 11 double sided black and white newsprint posters that illustrate their findings. The research will be illustrated with a variety of mediums including photography, typography and found graphic materials.
The resulting poster series will be available, for free, in a mobile outdoor installation during the 2011 Miami art fair weekend.”

Our "Barricades" project from Saturday nights Nuit Blanche event was one of the top pics from this Toronto Star review. Good shit.

"Farther down, glaring lights just south of Queen were both blinding and an irresistible draw into “Barricades,” a corridor of yellow caution tape walling in a pinwheel of blue cop barricades arranged into a makeshift sculpture.

Echoes of G20 chaos rung loudly, even as people took playful photographs in the web of the tape, but this work, by Jeremy Jansen and Niall McClelland, became my unexpected favourite: Dull, bright surveillance glare piquing irresistible curiosity, it epitomized the urge to be somewhere you shouldn’t. "

The whole night was good, really intense having a million(supposedly...) people walking downtown and funneling through the project.

308at156 is pleased to present the work of Niall McClelland, Jong Oh and Letha Wilson in Imprecise Geometry, organized by Wendy Olsoff of P•P•O•W Gallery. All three of these emerging artists work with geometric forms within distinct art making practices; installation, photography and carbon paper drawings. These various investigations reveal that, no matter how we represent reality, there is always imprecision.

Niall McClelland’s pieces are created by taking large sheets of carbon paper that he folds until it becomes small enough to fit in his back pants pocket. He then travels with this folded paper for days, weeks sometimes months at a time as he works and travels. Once the paper is unfolded, it reveals a drawing made of white creases made from the folds. The precision of the line is made more complex by the history it has lived in its making.

Jong Oh’s sculptural installations are both playful and serious. He uses geometric forms that merge drawings and installation. Using found objects and painted color forms, Oh brings to attention the architectural whimsy of a room as well as the potential of volume and space through unobtrusive linear sculpture.

Letha Wilson’s photographic works are geometric trompe-l’œils of nature. Taking images such as a rock, sand, trees in a forest and then cutting into, out of, and placing objects on, Wilson uses geometric motifs to interpret and confront the natural landscape.

Niall McClelland is a Toronto-based artist and has recently shown at Clint Roenisch Gallery in Toronto and P.P.O.W Gallery, New York. Jong Oh is a New York-based artist and recent graduate of the School of Visual Arts. He has an upcoming show at Marc Straus Gallery, New York. Letha Wilson is a New York-based artist and has been in numerous exhibitions, most recently, Higher Pictures, New York, and the Bronx River Arts Center, New York.

Wendy Olsoff is the co-owner of P•P•O•W which was founded in 1983. She has curated numerous exhibitions, has lectured at conferences and universities around the US and serves on the boards of museum and non-profit committees.

308at156 Project Artspace serves as a unique creative platform for new and emerging artists, selected by seasoned guest curators. This new inter-disciplinary space is located in the Presbyterian Building, a French Gothic chateaux-inspired office building on lower Fifth Avenue. In this architectural jewel with its diverse history, the organization is programming events and exhibitions in which young artists and curators have the chance to meet, engage and promote new collaborative projects. The next exhibition, beginning January, 2012, will be curated by artist Leslie Kerby.

"Art meets fashion, Canadian-style"

...high praise from Toronto Star art reviewer Murray Whyte on thestar.com today, regarding my work with Jeremy Laing and his recently released S/S 2012 collection -

"Art and fashion have always seemed like strange kin -- both being obsessive hobbies of the rich and/or famous, for one, though art has ever been the poor cousin -- so it's a moderate no-brainer that one of Canada's top young designers might cross-fertilize his own aesthetic with that of a rising young Canadian artist. Enter Jeremy Laing, whose show in New York last weekend featured diaphynous shifts and naughty see-through dresses printed with the rough geometries of Niall McLelland.

A little over a year ago, McLelland became that rarest of Canadian art phenomena, the overnight sensation, when his sharp, cleverly austere, process-based works touched a nerve in the market. His photocopy works -- large sheafs of paper rendered flat blackin the copier, then folded and carried in his pocket for a few weeks to create an lived-in pattern of creasing -- flew off the walls at the Clint Roenisch Gallery. Then, last fall, frantic bidding for a piece at a silent auction nearly devolved into a fist-fight.

And now? Laing's a budding fashion-world bona-fide, adored by an increasing number of a moneyed, exclusive set. If they hadn't heard of Niall McLelland before, they have now. Which means getting your hands on one of his pieces just got that much harder. Curse you, Laing! And congrats."

Field of Vision - Jessica Eaton

Nice little name drop in this short article of friend and fantastic artist Jessica Eaton, from Field of Vision.
Nice shit as usual from Jessica.

"An unforeseen fascination with sizzling, bold, graphic and sometimes abstract experimentation on FOV at the moment with recent posts.
More interesting, progressive work in a similar vein from young Canadian photographer Jessica Eaton. Her work explores what photography is and can be, looking at the themes of light, time and spatial relations. Creating images of geometry and colour that play with the viewers perceptions, all Eaton's images are created in-camera. No post at all. Which is pretty impressive, especially with the photographs toward the bottom of this page - undoubted homages to Josef Albers and Victor Vasarely - a couple of which look almost entirely computer-generated. The experimental colour photographic work of James Welling seems to have spurred a generation of young photographers to experiment with what can be achieved with the medium, and Eaton is pushing things in an interesting direction, along with peers such as Caleb Charland and Niall McClelland. When she works, she has no clear defined final image in mind when she begins each series, instead setting out with an idea of what the outcome may be, but going with the flow. As she says, "each time I shoot, the results influence the next step. I often like to leave a lot of space for accidents to happen and am most satisfied with the work when it takes on a life of its own." It seems that she is only just beginning to touch on what can be achieved, and we're going to watch her evolution with interest.
Below are a selection of images, not chronological, but showing an evolution of style. And the final shot is something of a reveal, showing one of her studio set-ups."

Historically, the formulas of Modernism have lent themselves to the imposition of structures on nature. Utilizing an economy of means, or a paring down of form, some artists have drawn attention to the processes and materials that they employ in order to comment on limitations inherent in human observation and experience. The impossibility of this search for certainty is prescient in a world rife with unforeseen technological advances and consequences. From Kurzweilian "singularities” to the embrace of dystopic or parallel hyper-realities, many artists today use Modernist tropes to draft odes to possible futures.

In the face of such infinitely malleable destinies, the ten artists selected for this exhibition remain undaunted. In bold, minimal and idiosyncratic terms, they propose new, decidedly un-grandiose, vernaculars through various mediums such as video, photography, and sculpture. Their works concern themselves with an intensely personal present tense, with lives lived and documented in real time. These works are inward, solipsistic, and in some instances, similar to an occult experience or an exercise in ritualized revelation. The art object is often left over from actions performed in service of an impossible quest, or crafted in playful celebration of it. These artists seem to exist in cultural peripheries, lobbing ruminations out of left fields, revealing epistemological truths—truths that have little or nothing to do with changing the world.

"Heading back to where I started, I visit Clint Roenish Gallery and am wowed by the stark minimalism of Niall McClelland’s works on paper, fabric and mesh. There’s a death metal aura that lingers around these otherwise formal process-oriented pieces. And just like the best metal, extreme discipline and rigor, in the right hands, leads to surprisingly elemental ends. At least, that’s my theory until I turn the corner and come upon the psychedelic rainbow hues of McClelland’s Stain works. I’m going to have to think a bit more about how they fit in."

"The Contact Festival of Photography touches down this weekend, bigfooting the art agenda for much of the next month, but that doesn’t mean it all goes full-stop. On Thursday, Niall McClelland’s first solo exhibition, the aptly named “Highest Price Paid for Gold” opens at the Clint Roenisch Gallery, and my bet is you’ll see why. McClelland showed here with Jeremy Jansen a little over a year ago, and I gushed happily that the then-unknown young artist was destined for semi-stardom. Now with accolades abroad, high demand for his work and a near-fistfight for a piece of his entered in a charity auction here recently, it looks like my crystal ball was right. McClelland’s game use of low-fi imaging technology like inkjet cartridges and photocopies to create counter-intuitively organic works never fails to beguile. Show up and see what I mean."

Review of "In the Dark" at the Eleanor Harwood Gallery in SF.

"One of the first lessons in Drawing 101 class is that the “negative space” between objects is as important as the shapes of rendered objects. With the discovery of dark matter we might now nervously joke, whistling, that the visible universe is merely what is left over, excluded or extruded from the dark. That conclusion is partially verified by three artists — Joseph Bender, Francesca Pastine and Niall McClelland — who eschew color, preferring the blacker shades of dark. Once your eyes adapt to being “In the Dark,” the subtle joys of tone, texture and context become more important; and maybe your hearing improves, too. . .

Bender’s dark oils or oils/alkyds on 36 x 36” aluminum squares call to mind Ad Reinhardt’s 50”-square black cross paintings of the 1950s. “Addition is Not Subtraction” even employs the familiar cruciform composition; in other works, however, Bender is more severely reductive and monochrome — and ironic, considering titles like “Fabricator of Hidden Riddles,” “Where Dogs and Vultures Meet,” and, of course, “Crepuscular Predilection.” They vary in brushstroke and finish, if not in hue, asserting their materiality as we peer into their opaque “confrontational but contemplative” depths. Pastine works with printed newspaper and graphite in her “Iraq Casualty” series. New York Times cover pages from 2006 to 2008 are obscured with metallic 9B lead strokes, burying most of the type and imagery so that poignant slices of reality — body bags, coffins, a mourner — can expand to assume larger importance. In “Blackout, Section A Series,” she completely coats the paper, suggesting both censorship and mourning. McClelland’s “Tapestry” pieces are arrays of black page-sized rectangles with worn white creases, folds and puckers. They resemble astronomical charts without stars, or maps without geographical features, and reflect, darkly, both 1960s Minimalism and 1970s Process Art."

In December there was a FUNeral. A eulogy was read. We sang, cried, and danced together. There was a will. The house was sold off (to a bar, yes 103 Havemeyer will now be a bar). Days rolled on as thoughts of the deceased lingered. She was gone but we never stopped feeling her presence. Soft whispers in the night, shadowy forms off in the distance just out of reach, caught in the void between life and death. But now there is a portal, an opening for us all, a RESURRECTION….She will leave our memory as an idea, slowly fading and will again rise up into the physical world. This moment of resurrection brings great light as we have witnessed the death and are here again to bear witness to the rebirth.

I have a piece in the "Picture Book 1" exhibit that opens tonight at the Interurban Gallery in Vancouver.
Awesome bro Scott Lewis curated the show and is the new director of the gallery.
Coincidently, I used to have a studio above the gallery back in 2004.
Also, Jeff Lee is DJing along with having work in the show, so you know the opening will be rad.

Here's a brief description of the fair:

”The Salone Internazionale del Mobile is the International Furniture Fair of Milan and the largest decoration trade fair in the world. The annual show showcases the latest in furniture and design from international sources. It is considered by interior designers as a leading exposition for the display of new products by furniture manufacturers, designers, lighting concepts, and other design items. The show is commonly abbreviated as “Salone”, “Milano Salone”, and also “Milan Design Week”. It is held every year, usually in April, in the FieraMilano complex in the Milan metropolitan area town of Rho.”

Exhibition: 20 March to 16 April 2011

Clint Roenisch is pleased to present a group show about optics, colour, geometry, perception and credence. The exhibition includes sculpture, drawing, painting, textiles and works on paper and also serves to introduce the photographs of Jessica Eaton to the gallery.

The exhibition opens with Chris Cran's oil painting, "Green Photographer," a monochrome portrait done in strictly horizontal or vertical brushstrokes that causes the features of 'the photographer' depicted to switch from negative to positive as the viewer moves past. Cran uses oil paint to mimic the photographic process of harnessing light to convert film to print. Jessica Eaton uses a wide array of experimental, analogue-based photographic techniques such as colour separation filters, multiple exposures, dark slides and in-camera masking to build images on sheets of 4x5 film that often evoke the paintings and wall-works of Josef Albers and Sol Lewitt. Her two works here, "cfaal 78" and "Interpolation Dramatization 4," address fundamental properties of photography such as light, chance, duration, illusion and colour theory. Adjacent to Eaton's constructed photographs is Jason de Haan's "Untitled Cube (Mirror Box Containing the Northern Lights)." This is a cube lined with mirrors that de Haan made in northern Canada and then used one night to "capture" a portion of the aurora borealis. Thus where Eaton optically manipulates the exterior of cubes and blocks to suggest illusory colours and forms, de Haan seals an optical phenomena inside one. Both Eaton's images and de Haan's sculpture optimistically strain the viewer's credulity. Two drawings by Marcel van Eeden are positioned nearby: one is a view of the Kaaba - the granite cube-shaped building in Mecca, Saudi Arabia - and the other a hard-edged black and white abstraction of stark, intersecting volumes. In this pairing geometry and faith seem to intersect. Across from the van Eeden drawings a square silkscreen by Guido Molinari presents blocks of blue-black colours so closely related that the eye begins to perceive subtle motions of expansion and retraction within the pattern. In the rear gallery is a work on paper - but called a Tapestry - made from the folding of a large black photocopy by Niall McClelland, a young artist who excels at coaxing elegant geometric and spatial inquiries from very economical materials. Diagonally opposite is "Munari's Eyes," a pair of coloured spirals made of satin cords by Jennifer Murphy that references the visual wit of Bruno Munari, the late Italian Futurist and graphic designer. The exhibition ends with a rare and early suite of colour designs for sailboat sails from 1975 by the painter Harold Klunder. The artist, so renowned for the biomorphic vocabulary of forms in his actual canvasses, here unfurls dazzling geometric arrangements of bars and rays in these imagined sails.

Good review from the San Francisco Chronicle of the group exhibit "In the Dark: Three Considerations" that I'm currently in at the Eleanor Harwood Gallery:

"Eleanor Harwood Sheds Light on 3 Eclectic Artists

The title of the three-person show at Eleanor Harwood's - "In the Dark: Three Considerations" - promises more than the show delivers, but if that brings heightened attention to the work of Toronto artist Niall McClelland, then no matter.

McClelland made each of his three unframed pieces here by blackening an extra-large sheet of photo-copying paper. He then creased, crumpled and flattened it - to an extent - to produce a black field flickering with galaxies of white detail.

Some of the creases form rigid patterns, such as the one-point perspective and parallel diagonals in "Tapestry - Beaten" (2010). But the tracery of vastly many more records the ungovernable collapse of the paper under pressure.

We might interpret McClennand's pieces, with their hints of a cosmic plenum under systematic scrutiny, as abstract figures for humankind's need to master reality with concepts and procedures. But even regarded as empty process exercises, these works honor pleasure in seeing for its own sake as too little contemporary art does.

Joe Bender's oil and alkyd on aluminum paintings show viewers the same respect in different terms, by surrendering their inner complexities only to sustained, desiring attention. The longer you look, the more the paintings declare their visible reality individually, until it becomes difficult to regain your initial impression of their equivalence. As in McClelland's work, that transit has a lyricism that most contemporary art does not incline us to anticipate.

Francesca Pastine temporarily abandoned the flashing humor of her art magazine deconstructions for political statements that bring Sarah Charlesworth's too readily to mind. Pastine has blotted out with graphite all but selected details of pages from the New York Times that expose the moral hypocrisy of wealth and power and media complicity in their mythology. No news, sad to say."
